Carving the Psyche

Sunday 21st October 2012, Xscape, Milton Keynes

iDID Adventure launches ‘Carving The Psyche’ to raise awareness of mental health issues in association with MK Mind, DSUK and Relentless.

Founded by Susanne Rees, iDID Adventure has rapidly become a leading provider of inclusive adventure sports experiences for deaf and disabled individuals.

Carving The Psyche attracted the support of renowned action sport sponsor Relentless. A spokeswoman for Relentless commented ‘We are delighted to be associated with this event and think it is a fantastic initiative. As an organisation, we are keen to promote the benefits of action sports for physical and mental health’

On the backdrop of World Mental Health Day, iDID ‘Carving The Psyche’ aimed to raise awareness of mental health issues in the deaf community. Lessons were provided by Disability Snowsports UK to ensure that the event was fully inclusive to individuals with physical disabilities, and a talk was provided by Steve McNay of Milton Keynes Mind on the issues surrounding Depression and Anxiety.

Our group of wannabe skiers eagerly jumped into their ski clothes and helmets and were raring to get on the slopes. Any nerves were calmed by our fantastic instructors Sam and Charlie from DSUK. Throughout the lesson, participants learned a variety of skills to ensure they could safely travel down the slope. This included mastering the technique of skiing at the same time as doing "Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes" .... obviously!

The end of the lesson came far too quickly and the group felt as though something was missing... a little competition. The challenge was to see who come jump the most before they reached the bottom of the slope. It was all going so well...

We are pleased to say that most of the group survived it! That was except from our winner who jumped the most but landed in the middle of another group at the end of the slope!

With everyone in high spirits and alreading asking to ski again, we headed off to our talk on Depression and Anxiety, presented by MK Mind. This open talk allowed people at the SNo!zONE to learn about issues surrounding mental health and it was fantastic to see people talking openly about it.

It is important to thank everyone involved in Carving The Psyche for making the day so successfully most notably to Relentless Energy Drinks for fuelling our day. Now we cannot wait until our next event!
